Psychodynamic Psychopharmacology

This course addresses the many aspects of combining medication and psychotherapeutic treatment, including the meaning of medication to the patient, a review of recent social/medical history as it pertains to the prescription of psychoactive medications, the dilemma experienced by the prescribing psychiatrist working with both mind and brain, and the potential complications that entail following the development of split transference phenomena. Attendees are welcome to present brief clinical vignettes for discussion.

Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • Identify and apply appropriate clinical techniques when helping the patient adjust to being on medication
  • Explain and analyze acting out in the pharmacological context
  • Describe and address the countertransference phenomena in the relationship between prescriber and therapist
  • Discuss with the patient the symbolic and relational meaning of “the pill” in a clinically correct way

Bruce Gainsley, MD, is an analytically informed general psychiatrist in private practice, past Director of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program at the New Center for Psychoanalysis, and Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Elena Ortiz-Portillo, MD, is an attending physician at San Fernando Mental Health Center and an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and  Bio-behavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. She supervises and lectures psychiatry residents at the UCLA/Olive View Psychiatry Residency Training Program.
