Love after Love is a family drama in which the father dies early on, leaving behind a loving, bereft wife and two grown sons. The film pulls us into a familiar story told in an original and nuanced way.  It beautifully portrays the shifts and conflicts that emerge in the interpersonal relationships between the three surviving family members, as well as the struggles they each have with relationships, both new and existing, outside the family.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to: 

• Describe the capacity to work therapeutically with families and family members who have been affected by a recent loss. The implications of bereavement in personal relationships will be clearer and more accessible to psychotherapeutic interventions
• Assess how loss and grief may lead to internal changes, promoting or limiting psychological growth

Julie Tepper, PsyD, LMFT, is a psychoanalyst and a psychotherapist with a private practice in west Los Angeles. She specializes in working with late adolescents, adults, and couples. She is a senior instructor at the New Center for Psychoanalysis.

Michele Economou, LMFT, is in private practice in Sherman Oaks. Over the last few years she has broadened her psychodynamic and mindfulness-based psychotherapy orientation to include training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. This modality uses the patient’s present moment somatic indicators as a gateway to implicit memory, unconscious material and organizing beliefs that structure experience of self, other, and the world. In addition to complementing psychodynamic practice, the somatic perspective is especially useful for working with trauma and panic disorders, both of which can render the patient overwhelmed and unable to handle arousal levels in the body.
