ESENTS: --\n\n-- The Never-Ending Challenge of Reinventing Psychoanalysi
s for the Unknown --\n\n“Psychoanalysis goes far deeper than any other
form of communication in a relationship that anybody knows so far. But.
.. especially if we are going to have to deal with patients which are no
t really like the sort of patient which is spoken of in classical psycho
analysis, then not only are we to treat these patients, but we have to i
nvent the methods by which we are going to treat them.”  (Bion, Los A
ngeles, 1967/2013)\n\nDuring this two-day conference, Ofra Eshel will pr
esent two works, which will be evaluated and discussed by contemporaries
Charles Levin, Aner Govrin, and Mary Tennes, as well as a clinical case
presentation by Margaret Rubin. The works focus on recognition of the p
aradox of learning uncertainty and multiplicity of knowledge as well as
helping clinicians withstand the Unknown while building capacity to cont
ain psychodynamic dislocation. The discussions of Dr. Eshel’s papers w
ill focus on the brilliantly creative and fundamental quality of her psy
choanalytic work, which draws deeply on the analytic tradition, particul
arly Winnicott and Bion; but also on how she helps us to think beyond th
em. \n\nThe Leonard J. Comess Israel Teaching Fund has underwritten thi
s program.\n\nIf you cannot attend the live session but want to receive
a recording, please register. An event recording will be emailed to you.
The case presentation will not be recorded. Please allow up to one week
for NPC to email the recorded material.\n\n \n\n-- Conference Schedule

 - Learning Objectives: --\n\nAs a result of attending this program, part
icipants will be able to:\n\n* Re-think and discuss the essence of the u
nknown in different areas in psychoanalysis: massively traumatic states,
patients’ telepathic dreams, and sudden death.\n\n* Assess clinically
the meaning of the ontological-experiential shift in psychoanalysis - f
rom epistemological (knowing) exploration and interpretation to being an
d becoming in the experience.\n\n* Explain how the development of the an
alyst’s imagination and experience allows the analyst to reinvent ways
of working within the patient-analyst “withnessing,” while transcen
ding subjective boundaries in order to establish a new analytic experien
ce and understanding. \n\n* Demonstrate increased capacity and willingn
ess to work within the darkest abysmal traumatic depths of unrepressed a
nd unrepresented unconscious states.\n\n* Identify new essentials of ana
lytic work emerging from the spectrum of analytic oneness, and apply the
understanding of Winnicott-Bion-Eshel spectrum to their analytic work w
ith difficult patient and difficult analytic situation.\n\n* Describe th
e meaning of the patient’s experiencing and living through “for the
first time” the hitherto unexperienced and unrepresented breakdown in
treatment (Winnicott).\n\n* Explain the difference between projective/in
trojective identification and the process of at-one-ment (late Bion). \
n\n* Examine how Eshel deepens the late Bion-Winnicott ontological appro
ach and points the way beyond the psychoanalytic canon, particularly thr
ough her concepts of "the spectrum of analytic oneness," "projective rea
lization," and "vicarious self-state dissociation, " in work with severe
ly traumatized patients.\n\n* Evaluate how the “enchanted-troubled pos
ition” can lead to meaningful theoretical and technical developments i
n psychoanalysis while maintaining connection to established frameworks.
\n\n* Re-think and discuss the years-long enigma of telepathic dreams.
\n\n* Compare and clarify the links between Eshel’s psychoanalytic mod
el of analytic oneness, the emergence of telepathic experiences within p
sychoanalysis, and the pressing need to attend, at this moment in time,
to collective global catastrophes. \n\n* Discuss the reliving of the ea
rly breakdown and catastrophic loneliness in the treatment experience wi
th the analyst as described in Rubin’s analysis of a severely fetishis
tic patient.\n\n* Summarize the spectrum of analytic oneness and how to
apply it to analytic work.\n\n* Demonstrate increased capacity to work w
ith unrepressed and unrepresented unconscious states.\n\n-- Program Coor
dinator: Dahlia Nissan Russ, PsyD, LCSW --\n\nCommittee: Dahlia Nissan R
