Food is a way of life for Masato, a Japanese ramen chef who works with his father and uncle, and whose favorite comfort food is a Singaporean pork rib soup he didn’t learn to make before his mother died when he was just ten. When his father dies, Masato discovers a suitcase filled with family photos, notebooks and souvenirs left by his mother. He decides to visit Singapore to find his mother’s side of the family and to reconnect with Singaporean cuisine. In his quest to find his family and favorite childhood dish, Masato discovers long lost relatives, culinary delights, and war scars that tore his family apart decades ago.

A discussion will be held after the film. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe how cooking and eating enact unconscious fantasy and the relationship to attachment figures
2. Discuss how cooking serves as a strategy to manage loss, separation and overwhelm
3. Discuss the impact of unspoken transgenerational trauma, and how the culinary pursuit of one’s roots may contain a felt sense of fracture and a longing for healing and reconciliation

Discussants:

Luis Alejandro Nagy, PhD, is a psychoanalyst and a computer scientist who practices in Arcadia, CA. In addition, he works as Chair of the IPA Social Media Committee and member of NCP.  He is also a member of the Training Committee and a supervisor at the Rose City Center, Pasadena.  With a special interest in films and communications, he serves as advisor to the Website Editorial Committee of the IPA and was former Chair of Communications of the Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies of Latin-America.  He is a Professor and a Training Analyst at the Chinese American Psychoanalytic Alliance and an international speaker promoting online safety and prevention through detection of pathological use of the internet in treating children and adults. 

Michele Economou, LMFT, is in private practice in Sherman Oaks. In addition to a psychodynamic and mindfulness-based orientation, her focus includes Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, which uses the patient’s present moment somatic indicators as a gateway to implicit memory and organizing beliefs that structure experience of self, other, and the world.

Target audience: Mental health professionals and open to the public interested in psychoanalytic perspectives. Open to members and the community.
