Jaws (1975), an American thriller that has stood the test of time, is a monster movie of uncommonly acute psychological realism. Director Stephen Spielberg terrorizes both the audience and the characters with the ultimate castration nightmare: to be "swallowed whole" by an enormous vagina dentata.

In its imagery (phallic symbols abound), story structure, and in the competitive dynamics of its trio of male protagonists, the film dramatizes the primacy of Oedipal struggles. The film's rare staying power — 50 years after its release, it is still one of the world’s most beloved and well-known films, continuing to shock and delight audiences the world over — Jaws embodies a literalization of the unconscious: we cannot help but fear what's beneath the surface of our psyches.

Where to watch

Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home and others

Schedule:

*** All times listed are Pacific Time (PT) ***

Discussion (on Zoom): 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM - We will hear from our discussants and explore the film together.

We will not watch the film together prior to the discussion. Participants should watch the film beforehand or begin screening on their own before 6:15 pm PT.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of phallic/castrative symbology in a patient's clinical material; connect such material with fear of death/shame/guilt/quest for vengeance.
  • Describe at least two pathways by which repressed shame and guilt re-emerge.
  • Analyze how the tonicity and intervals and the rhythmic structure of the score evoke emotional reactions and a general mood within segments of the film.

Program Coordinators:

Thomas Brod, MD, Apurva Shah, MD and Mary Starks, MA, LPCC
