a recent paper by Dana Sawyer, who will also be presenting at the May 2
025 Manifest Mind Conference.\n\nThe following is a partial list of the
topics and concepts to be covered in this course.  \n\n* Affect is the
fundamental form of consciousness;\n\n* Feeling by an organism of fluct
uations in its own needs enables choice and thereby supports survival in
unpredicted contexts. This is the biological function of experience;\n\
n* Consciousness is seated in the midbrain, not the Cortex;\n\n* The cer
ebral cortex provides context, “memory of the future”, to consciousn
ess;\n\n* Consciousness is part of nature and it is mathematically tract
able;\n\n* Perception is applied uncertainty; \n\n* Action is an ongoin
g process of hypothesis-testing and error correction;\n\n* Affect is an
extended form of homeostasis, bringing choice into LIFE’s fight agains
t ENTROPY;\n\n* Affect hedonically valences biological needs… Each cat
egory of need—of which there is a great variety—has an affective qua
lity of its own;\n\n* Needs cannot all be felt at once.  They are prior
itized in midbrain and ranked on a “saliency map”.  The actions tha
t are generated by prioritized affects are voluntary, which means they a
re subject to here-and-now choices rather than pre-established algorithm
s;\n\n* All mammals share midbrain seated MOTIVATIONAL SYSTEMS described
by Jaak Panksepp;\n\n* The default drive (when all goes well) is SEEKIN
G—proactive engagement with uncertainty, with the aim of resolving unc
