Dr. Melvin R. Lansky discusses the aversion to apologizing based on the anticipation of shame resulting from self-indictment as being weak and as being less than what she or he feels expected to be. The presentation is followed by a discussion of the topic with the audience. Dr. Lansky’s paper is a chapter in Shame: Developmental, Cultural, and Clinical Realms, a book edited by Salman Akhtar.

• Understand the extent to which disruption and repair of the patient-analyst bond requires the ability to apologize on the part of both patient and analyst.
• Understand impediments to such repair posed by anxieties about appearing weak and by the anticipation of shame at the prospect of self-indictment when one apologizes

Melvin R. Lansky, MD, DFAPA, is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA Medical School. He is the co-author of The Widening Scope of Shame with Andrew P. Morrison, and has authored numerous journal articles, including Shame: Contemporary Psychoanalytic Perspectives.
