A Fantastic Woman

This Chilean film is the story of Marina and Orlando, who are lovers and are planning their future, when one night Orlando suddenly falls ill and dies. Instead of being able to mourn her lover, Marina is treated with suspicion by authorities and with disdain by his family. She is forbidden to attend his funeral and is evicted from the apartment they shared because Marina is a transgender woman and, for most of Orlando’s family, her sexual identify is a perversion. She must battle the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become the woman she is now -- complex, strong, forthright and fantastic.
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Analyze the contradictions heroine/hero versus those within the rejecting group at large
- Discuss in depth the differences between sex and gender
- Explain the roles of psychology and psychoanalytic field in humanization or dehumanization of individual’s freedom and acceptance of diversity
- Describe the significance of being aware of one’s own biases that are influenced by social current for a therapist working with people who do not fit in a predefined binary heterosexual system
Shahin Sakhi, M.D., PhD, is an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA, candidate in psychoanalytic training at the New Center Psychoanalysis, and in private practice in West Los Angeles. He is a certified consultant from the AK Rice Institute for the Study of Social Systems.
Christopher Meyer, PhD, is an Analyst of the School, and Faculty of the Lacanian School of Psychoanalysis, San Francisco, psychoanalyst and psychologist in private practice in Beverly Hills, CA. He supervises in the Individual Adult Program of The Maple Counseling Center in Beverly Hills, CA. He is a member of GIFRIC (Groupe Interdisciplinaire Freudienne pour Recherches et d’Interventions Clinique et Culturelles), the Freudian School of Québec, and the California Psychoanalytic Circle of the Freudian School of Québec. He has published articles in The American Journal of Semiotics, the journal Savoir, Psychanalyse et analyse culturelle, in Correspondences: Courrier de l’École freudienne du Québec, and in (a): the Journal of Culture and the Unconscious.
