Would you like to extend the roots of your mind deeper into the soil of the unconscious and feel more clear and confident in your work with patients?  Have you considered working analytically? We discover ways to grow an analytic mind using foundational concepts and practices to facilitate working more analytically, utilizing a Kleinian/Bionian/Winnicottian/Infant Observation point-of- view.

Using shared clinical material, we refine our listening skills as we search deeply and carefully for the “baby” in the patient.  With our countertransference, we learn to listen for cues about the patient’s unformulated anxieties ranging from the pre-verbal somatic to the psychic, noting  various defenses the baby uses to protect itself from life’s emotional storms. We identify many ‘dance-like’ rhythms of the mommy/baby analytic couple necessary for growth.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this course, participants will be able to:

• Explain how the dyad is the smallest functional human relationship
• Describe channels for making interpretations besides the spoken word
• Identify the therapeutic benefits of “ listening to a silence”
• Explain how “history is hearsay”
• Explain how the therapist’s need to “cure” the patient, or frustration over “not getting anything done” is counterproductive
• Explain how a deep understanding of enactment mistakes can paradoxically build trust and foster growth

Glenn Mowbray, PsyD, is a former radio host, popular speaker, and faculty member in the Adult and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Programs at NCP, where he teaches Klein, Bion, Infant Observation, and provides clinical consultation.  He is on faculty at UCLA, where he supervises and teaches psychiatric residents.  He teaches at the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute and Chicago School of Professional Psychology.  He teaches, consults and practices psychoanalysis internationally over Zoom.  He has chaired presentations of papers and presented his own clinical cases at International Bion and Frances Tustin Conferences, and at the 1st International Iranian Congress on Psychoanalysis.  He is the 2013 recipient of the Elyn R. Saks Scholarship for research into schizophrenia and other psychotic states.  Dr. Mowbray maintains private practices in Beverly Hills, Long Beach, and Newport Beach, where he helps high-risk, post-hospital/residential/rehab patients move forward with their lives in an intensive outpatient psychoanalytic holding environment.
