Film and Mind Online: The 400 Blows

April 22, 2022, 8:30 - 10:00 PM

Join NCP's Film and Mind series online!

images/400_blows.jpgThe 400 Blows (Les Quatre Cents Coups, 1959, 1h39m) was written by François Truffaut and is his directorial debut. This highly acclaimed film of the French New Wave Cinema stars Jean-Pierre Léaud as Antoine Doinel, a misunderstood adolescent. Through an aesthetically appealing scenario, the film follows the mostly behavioral expressions of the youth’s struggles. Slowly the unspoken, at times secretive elements of his family and their cultural complexity unfold and begin to shed light on the seemingly random explosiveness of the main character. In its aesthetic manner, the film unfolds somewhat like a psychotherapy session, as gradually the surface re-forms to reveal the deeper determinants.
