Clinical Moments
7:45 PM, December 2, 2025
Clinical Moments is a monthly series open to licensed mental health professionals and those under supervision.
Each month the program features a different analyst presenting a case in which a critical clinical moment in an ongoing analytic treatment is presented, followed by group discussion. This informal event typically meets on the first Tuesday evening of each month.
Jill Model Barth, PhD will present "Crickets: The Awkward Sounds of Silence."
The phrase "crickets" signifies silence because it's a metaphor for a conspicuous lack of response, where a response is expected and there's no reply. The irony is that crickets themselves are not quiet; however, their sound has become the auditory symbol for an absence of communication.
In an analytic setting we meet Rose, a 36 y.o. single Hispanic woman, who enacts a silence to show her analyst what it felt like when she did not get a response from her colleagues after her 15 minute presentation at work. The analyst uses reflective listening, interpretation and her countertransference to break through the silence and understand it as an early repetition of not being responded to by her mother.
Please note the following:
