Dyslexia and Other Learning Disorders, Educational Therapy and Psychoanalysis in the Trenches

Many children and adolescents are struggling with moderate to severe learning and processing impairments such as dyslexia; however, these issues are not directly worked on as central goals in any form of psychotherapy. Parents may struggle to find the right high-frequency intervention to work on these processing deficits and do not know where to turn for academic support. Frequently learning disorders are complicated by social and emotional setbacks, validating the need for intensive psychotherapy to address these issues. A detailed picture shown in a PowerPoint demonstration defining Educational Therapy through the lens of clinical Educational Therapy case is analyzed in conjunction with various psychoanalytic concepts to assist in a positive therapeutic assessment.
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:
- Define the field of Educational Therapy and show its relation to the use of psychoanalysis
- Attune clinicians to seek out the professional assistance of an Educational Therapist in case work
- Examine the nature of the “Twice Exceptional” population, and its relevance to neurosis and symptom formation
Sandy G. Ansari, MA, ET/P, MFTA, graduate of NCP’s Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Programs, practices as an Educational Therapist with over 15 years of experience treating children and adolescents on their overall educational and social emotional development. She has published in Psychoanalytic Inquiry on “A Basis for Creating a Reflective Network in Schools: Reflective Network Therapy in a Small Middle and High School" in 2015. She is interested in taking psychoanalytic theories one step further, applying them in the child’s real world, in schools, social groups and to parents.
