The James Grotstein Memorial Lectures

This set of three Thursday evenings at the New Center for Psychoanalysis honors Dr. Grotstein's work in comparative psychoanalytic theory. Throughout the international community, there was no analyst more passionate than James Grotstein in terms of his advocacy of learning from the various analytic traditions populating its universe. These meetings are geared primarily towards analytic/mental health practitioners.

Meeting #1 is on Thursday, March 8th, 8 to 10 PM  Three IPA Institutes (NCP, PCC and LAIPS) will co-sponsor a meeting on the CD-Rom playing of D.W. Winnicott’s 1962 Los Angeles lecture on ‘Dependence in Infant-Care, in Child Case and in the Psychoanalytic Setting.'  (This paper was published in 1963 and will be made available to you). In this 1 hour recording of Winnicott's (1962) talk to the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Society and Institute’s (LAPSI) candidates, we hear (and read via PowerPoint) WInnicott's elaboration of dependency in analytic therapy.   We have Howard Bacal as guest commentator and Peter Loewenberg serving as the program moderator for the evening.  There will be a brief presentation of an RBS gift to the NCP Library:  The Collected Works of D.W. Winnicott.

Meeting #2 is on Thursday, March 22nd, 8 to 10 PM   'Reconsidering Bion and Winnicott’s Clinical Exchanges—A Comparative Study.’  This presentation by Joseph Aguayo compares Winnicott’s work on the importance of the external object and how he took up aspects of Bion’s clinical contributions in the strife and rivalry that was emblematic of the British Psychoanalytical Society in the 1950s and 60s.  We will have a fresh look at letters and papers written by Winnicott as part of his collaborative, divergent and ultimately creative antagonism with Bion as a member of the London Klein group.  Key differences, such as Winnicott’s concept of holding and Bion’s notion of container/contained will be discussed.  John Lundgren serves as program moderator.  This paper will be available after March 8th.

Meeting #3 will be held on Thursday, April 5th, 8 to 10 PM  'Bion and Winnicott--A Clinical Dialogue.'  In this slightly longer meeting, Nicola Abel-Hirsch and Sira Dermen dialogue on key differences and similarities between these two pioneers on the ‘difficult-to-treat’ patient.  Key clinical differences that may create a generative binary tension will be discussed, such as interpretation in the ‘here and now,’ as well as aspects of regression in the facilitating analytic environment. Implications for analytic treatment will be taken up.  Joseph Aguayo serves as program moderator.

$225 is the flat fee for this package of three presentations. An individual lecture is $150
