So what do I say…!!!? (Making Analytic Interpretations)

May 18, 2019, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM

How do you talk to a patient in a way that touches her unconscious heart and nurtures her mind?

This class covers basic concepts and practices to help you speak analytic interpretations, privileging a Kleinian/Bionian/Winnicottian/Infant Observation perspective.

We begin with an illustrative clinical vignette to orient us to the analytic field.

Then attendees can share a bit from a confusing, difficult clinical session. Together we will listen to transference/countertransference feelings to discern underlying projective and introjective Identifications coming from the patient's deepest anxieties and unconscious phantasies. In this transitional space we will try to discover the words that connect us to the "baby" in the patient and vitalize the analytic dyad.

Prior training and experience are not essential for this class. Come as you are. Beginners are welcome. All you really need to bring are your passion, curiosity and a clinical dilemma. Together we’ll see how far we can go!

Learning Objectives
After attending this course, participants should be able to:

  • Describe sources of anxiety that make formulating and speaking interpretations difficult
  • Understand when to use client-centered versus patient-centered interpretations
  • Explain how genetic interpretations are less effective than you-and-me, here-and-now interpretations
  • Describe three ways silence can be more effective than speaking (e.g., “Presencing,” Witnessing)
  • Understand the temptation to speak too much
  • Better utilize one’s countertransference in formulating interpretations
