Eighth Grade (2018, Bo Burnham, writer-director) is widely considered especially well-made and well-received (Metacritic rating of 90%, Rotten Tomatoes 99% positive). Winner of the Writers Guild best original screenplay award, Eighth Grade “is so grounded in the reality of middle school," said one reviewer, "it almost operates like a horrible collective flashback." Another said the film “has been made with a bone-deep and clear-eyed understanding.”

The film focuses on social media in the family life and social world of 13-year-old Kayla (Elsie Fisher). For this screening, we are privileged to have Luis Nagy present to discuss the film and then participate in the discussion with the program attendees. Dr. Nagy is an internationally recognized psychoanalytic educator who also specializes in social media.

Learning Objectives
As a result of attending this course, participants should be able to:

• Counsel and confer with parents, teens, and families about uses and limits to social media access
• Guide families through significant “cringe-worthy” moments of early adolescent development
• Describe how contemporary Social Media molds teen identity
• Discuss the traumatogenic aspects of premature sexual exposure on early teens

Luis Alejandro Nagy, PhD, is a psychoanalyst and a computer scientist who practices in Arcadia, CA. In addition, he works as Chair of the IPA Social Media Committee and member of NCP. He is also a member of the Training Committee and a supervisor at the Rose City Center in Pasadena. With a special interest in film and communications, he serves as advisor to the Website Editorial Committee of the IPA and was former Chair of Communications of the Federation of Psychoanalytic Societies of Latin-America. He is a Professor and a Training Analyst at the Chinese American Psychoanalytic Alliance and an international speaker promoting online safety and prevention through detection of pathological use of the Internet in treating children and adults.

Thomas Brod, MD, Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. He is a senior faculty member at NCP and the co-coordinator of the Film and Mind Series. He is also on the faculty of the ISTDP Institute (Washington, DC).
