Resentment in the Clinical Setting

Resentment may be defined as bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly. Dr. Lansky will initially discuss the concept of resentment. He will then turn to resentment in the clinical situation, where it may manifest in both the patient and the caregiver. Dr. Lansky will invite the participants to join him in an exploration of this complex affect.

Learning Objectives

As a result of attending this session, participants should be able to:

Explain the complex affect of resentment, its foundational elements, and its causal issues
Describe the basic skills to recognize and effectively respond to the presence of resentment in the transference and the countertransference
List three basic character traits central to defining resentment

Melvin R. Lansky, MD, is a training and supervising psychoanalyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA medical school. He is author or editor of seven books and over 150 articles in professional journals and was the recipient of the 2005 award from the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA) for his paper “The Impossibility of Forgiveness: Shame Fantasies as Instigators of Vengefulness in Euripides' Medea." He is in private practice in Westwood.
