The New Center for Psychoanalysis is pleased to invite the psychoanalytic community to attend this special full-day workshop. Join us to explore the topic of "Harm & Reparation" with Master Clinician-In-Residence, Jessica Benjamin, PhD.

This presentation will juxtapose the intrapsychic idea of reparation, based on understanding unconscious anxieties of harming the love object, with the intersubjective ideas of repairing rupture and restoring recognition. It aims to use and also reformulate the Kleinian idea of intrapsychic reparations in relation to the object. From an intersubjective perspective, there is a developmental need for experience and representation of a lawful world in which repair of attachment is possible. Dr. Benjamin shows us how enactments in the analytic relationship can become governed by mutual fear of harm and how to use the position of the moral Third to step out of complementarity and co-create the sense of a lawful world.

This event will be held at Shutters on the Beach in Santa Monica, a lovely setting for a day of community-wide discussion and exchange of ideas.  The day will include lecture, discussion, case presentation, and more.  Attendees will enjoy valet parking, continental breakfast, lunch, and a wine and cheese reception immediately following program.

Learning Objectives

After attending this conference, participants should be able to:

1. Discuss the analyst's fear of harming and how the aim of reparation figures in psychoanalytic thinking after the Winnicottian realization that the object must survive destruction.
2. Explain the development of the idea of rupture and repair, and how it has transformed the idea of reparation from an intrapsychic to an intersubjective one; and to recognize how the aim of intersubjective repair manifests in the treatment as well as developmentally.
3. Utilize the concept of the moral Third, which functions as a touchstone for the analyst caught in clinical impasses involving the "doer-done to" complementary. In particular, to consider the moral Third as it pertains to the need to acknowledge the resulting errors and injury.
4. Assess and discern when acknowledgment and disclosure by the analyst are helpful, and when not, especially when there are problems of dissociation and shame. 

Jessica Benjamin, PhD, is a psychoanalyst known for her contributions to psychoanalysis and social thought. She is currently a practicing psychoanalyst in New York City where she is on the faculty of the New York University Postdoctoral Psychology Program in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, and the Stephen Mitchell Center for Relational Studies. Jessica Benjamin is one of the original contributors to the fields of relational psychoanalysis, theories of intersubjectivity, and gender studies and feminism as it relates to psychoanalysis and society. She is known for her ideas about recognition in both human development and the sociopolitical arena.

David James Fisher, PhD, is a Senior Faculty Member and former member of the Board of Directors at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst at ICP. He is the author of three books: Bettelheim: Living and Dying (2008); Cultural Theory and Psychoanalytic Tradition (2009); and Romain Rolland and the Politics of Intellectual Engagement (2003). A Research Psychoanalyst, Dr. Fisher is trained as a cultural and intellectual historian. He has published extensively on the history of psychoanalysis, psychoanalytic cultural criticism, and the application of psychoanalytic perspectives to matters of politics, movies, and aspects of high and popular culture. 

Avedis Panajian, PhD, ABPP, is a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytical Association, a certified psychoanalyst, researcher, senior lecturer, and licensed psychologist in California. He has served as a board member of the Western Regional Board for Diplomates in Clinical Psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology. He has also received the Distinguished Educator Award from the California Board of Psychology. Dr. Panajian is also a Supervising and Training Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California, Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis and at the Newport Psychoanalytic Institute. Dr. Panajian's research interests include infantile development, trauma, and the treatment of severe emotional disorders.  

Cheryl Goldstein, PhD, is a Candidate and faculty member of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis (ICPLA). A UCLA graduate in Comparative Literature, she works in the areas of literature, psychoanalysis, and Jewish identity. Currently an Assistant Professor of Comparative World Literature at Cal State University, Long Beach she is also a student research clinical psychoanalyst and has a Masters in Rabbinic Literature.

Jill Smith, MD, is a Board Certified general and consultation-liaison psychiatrist and third-year Candidate in the Adult Psychoanalytic Training Program at the New Center for Psychoanalysis (NCP). She previously trained in cognitive behavior therapy and graduated from NCP's Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program. Dr. Smith works with adults and late adolescents in her private practice in Santa Monica. She competes in triathlons in her spare time.

Thomas Helscher, PhD, FIFA, is a Training and supervising Analyst at the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS) and a member of the Wright Institute Los Angeles (WILA). He is a member of the University of California Interdisciplinary Psychoanalytic Consortium and of the Lacanian Forum, and teaches in the UC Veterans Writing Workshop. He is in private practice in Santa Monica. 

George Bermudez, PhD, is currently a faculty member of Antioch University, Los Angeles following nearly 25 years as a clinical and family psychologist in poor urban neighborhoods. Dr. Bermudez has a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute (SCPI) and has been striving to develop and train others in a multi-dimensional, integrative approach to psychological theory and practice that brings together developmental theory, psychoanalysis, family systems, group psychology, and multiculturalism. 

Estelle Shane, PhD, is a Training/Supervising Analyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and one of the original members of a Chicago based study group led by Heinz Kohut -- a group that evolved into the present International Council for the International Association of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPSP). She was president of the IAPSP in 2007. She is co-author of the book Intimate Attachments: Towards a New Self Psychology, as well as author of numerous articles. Dr. Shane is in private practice in West Los Angeles.
