It is no wonder that the climate of political discord has sent shockwaves to analytic consulting rooms across the country. In these unprecedented, difficult political times, the analyst must carefully navigate the murky waters where people are confronted daily with incidences of distrust, discord and racial and ethnic prejudice. No longer is the consulting room a cloistered neutral space. In a typical practice the analyst comes face-to-face with patients exhibiting many anti-social behaviors and mindsets and must utilize clinical tools to address classical issues such as transference, counter-transference, and projective identification. Dr. Clayman-Cook argues that in today’s times it is necessary to keep in firm grasp family of origin issues and other dimensions of the patient’s character. In a chaotic environment it is necessary to address the patient’s need for tribalism and their membership in one group or another along with other issues of bigotry and hate. Issues of narcissism to be addressed include why certain personality disorders and types seek political office as well as why narcissism requires certain individuals to favor particular personality disorders.

• Discuss narcissism within personal and greater social context
• List personality organizations

Frank Clayman-Cook, PhD, has had a professional career as a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst for over 50 years, succeeding his musical career as a percussionist in many late rock bands. He has served as program director for a number of Westside treatment centers as well as establishing a dual-diagnosis unit in Los Angeles.  He is a training and supervising analyst and senior faculty member at NCP and ICP.
