Melancholia is a film that suggests multiple psychological interpretations. It can be seen as the breakout of a psychotic defense system in the main character. Or one can view all the characters in the film as aspects of a single mind undergoing 'catastrophic change.' Or it can be seen as a meditation on the breakdown of Expectation when destruction overwhelms repair. On the Meta level, we ask, How does such a film manage to be "beautiful"?
