Co-sponsored by the New Center for Psychoanalysis’ Program and Research Committees
Over the past two years a group of psychotherapy researchers, clinical psychoanalysts, and research study methodologists have worked to develop an outcome study of psychoanalysis. The design that emerged is a prospective, randomized comparison between psychoanalysis, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dynamic psychotherapy for the treatment of patients with mild to moderate chronic depression and significant interpersonal problems. Using a comprehensive battery of outcome measures, the study assesses not only symptom relief but, more deeply, long term changes in psychic structure and interpersonal functioning. The director of the study design committee discusses its development and recent pilot data on the feasibility of applying randomization to psychoanalysis.
Course Objectives
• Describe the difficulties of applying research methods to psychoanalysis
• Summarize the recent pilot data on the feasibility of randomization to psychoanalysis in research study design
• Discuss the importance of evaluating not only symptom relief but also long term changes in psychic structure and interpersonal functioning
