Mission Statement

The mission of the Program Committee of the New Center for Psychoanalysis is to provide its membership and the broader psychoanalytic community with up-to-date educational offerings that cover relevant clinical and research topics, as well as less directly relevant subjects that may be beneficially explored from a psychoanalytic perspective.

The objective of the committee is to enhance the clinical skills and general professional knowledge of participating professionals through greater understanding of psychoanalytic theory and practice, with the ultimate goal of improving practice and patient care. In the spirit of open inquiry, Program Committee offerings cover a range of theoretical perspectives and are presented in a manner that promotes cultural and linguistic competency as well as highly interactive learning.

Taking Risks from the Unconscious: A psychoanalysis as experienced from both sides of the couch

Dr. Marcus discusses the book he co-authored with his patient “Hope.” This analysis started with the premise that if it were to be helpful to the patient it would have to be different than her first analysis, which had not enabled her to get to the bottom of her difficulties. He will tell how Hope helped him to develop the courage to risk responding directly from his unconscious, allowing their true selves to meet, while still maintaining the analytic frame. In the words of Dr. Ted Jacobs: “The joint collaboration of patient and analyst provides rare insights into the healing process in a successful analysis and raises many intriguing questions about the way that therapy works.”

Course Objectives

• Attendees will learn how the collaboration of patient and analyst can be enhanced through an emotional meeting of true selves while maintaining legitimate boundaries;

• Attendees will learn meaningful ways to obtain feedback from patients as to their experience of the therapeutic process;

• Attendees will be exposed to new perspectives on analytic technique and will obtain new insights into how therapy works.

Donald M. Marcus M.D. is a training and supervising analyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and at the Psychoanalytic Center of California. He has a private practice in Los Angeles.
